20th Century Fashion from Deco to Disco

Accessory Mavin Iris Apfel

Today, I’m thinking about 93 year old fashion inspiration Iris Apfel. You’ve seen her: big round glasses, tons of jewelry, always looks like she’s having more fun than three 30 year olds  combined.

Iris was born in  Astoria, Queens  in 1921, she studied art history, launched a textile firm, and took part in  design restoration projects at the White House for nine presidents.

Fabulous stuff, this, but we know her for her absolutely fearless style.

About clothing and accessories, Apfel says:

“More is more and less is a bore”

“If you want to experiment, try; no one is going to put you in jail if you buy the wrong skirt.”

“My mother knew if you bought a couple of really good architectural outfits and put your money into accessories, you could create a million different looks.”

“Transformation, punch, individuality: One or all of the above are why you should wear jewelry.”

She’s been amazing for a long time. Here is a photo of her in Tunisia in 1960.

I am a vintage clothing shop owner living and working in rural north Florida. I believe in adding a little vinegar and molasses to my greens, having my coffee outside whenever possible, and mixing something vintage into every room and every outfit.
